So here's a simple question...

What non-GW paints do you use?

I'll be brutually honest why I'm interested, I've got a number of potential distributors lined up at Curious Constructs now, and I'm looking into stocking hobby supplies. Now of course there are the obvious choices to be made there, but initially I'm probably looking into stocking just one paint range alongside other stuff and want to make sure that is the one you use.

What do you get out it aside from my thanks?

Well a source for cheaper paint and hobby supplies hopefully!

P3 paints here. Though I mix and match shamelessly to be honest. Yet to try Army Painter or Reaper paints yet though I've heard they are quite good.

I use some Reaper mini inks (when GW got rid of inks, I needed a real close replacement)

I enjoy the Reaper Master Series and Vallejo Model/Air colors, personally. A decent online Reaper vendor would be a gem.

I use mostly vallejo these days, model and game colour, mostly model tbh as I like the de saturated look and they have excellent pigments. dropper bottles are a big plus for me too.

if you're an "out of the pot" user though they probarbly wont suit.

I confess to mostly using GW paints, but the Army Painter tones are nice and I use them prodigiously - getting through a pot in a few weeks.

Mostly GW still, but also Tamyia and Vallejo. Those are both better for airbrushing than GW and both generally give a better finish and coat.

I've got to admit, I buy my paint locally. It's the one thing I always buy from the local shop (unless it's going to be a HORRIBLY long stock time), especially as I buy more and more of my other stuff online.

Having said that, Vallejo and P3 are my paints of choice. Both are good products (the Vallejo Air range is insanely good), offer a massive range of colours, are brush and airbrush friendly, and are pretty damned inexpensive.

If you're going to stock paints, but not the whole Vallejo range (and given how massive it is, I can't blame you), I've got to recommend you carry the Transparent and Glaze selections, they're utterly invaluable and if you're selling them, we'll see more people using them and taking their painting up another notch. Their rust and track selections are excellent as well.

I stick to the Vallejo model and game color ranges.

To be honest, I use ceramcoat or Americana, which are dirt cheap at the hobby shop. You get like four times as much as GW, for like a quarter of the price. The colors don't mix quite as well, and they don't sit on the shelf quite as well, but the price makes up for the difference.

I have a lot of GW paints so i mostly use those, but each time i need to replace a colour, i go for Vallejo now. I find the bottles easier to store and i like the dropper bottles. The colours mix up well, i just prefer them to GW. I have to say i have never used Reaper or Army Painter so i'd would be fair to comment on without using them

Many moons ago I got hold of some p3 paints (around the time of release) which I use if I need a specific coulour - though I dont like the gloss look some of the paints have. I also splurged out on a substantial quantity of Vallejo Model Colour and find a few of the colours and shades to be staple of my colour set (brass/gold/white/offwhite/reds).

Since the introduction of the new paint range any of my GW collurs which run out I intend to replace with their coat d'arms equivalent. For messy work such as basing/airbrushing base coats I use Vallejo Game CColour (GW colour matches and 17ml a pot for cheaper than GW is the reason here). I've picked up a few army painter colours to try on an upcoming project where I'm using a pure red spray base so wanted the 100% match for touch ups.

In short my ideal store stocking paints would have the following (in order of importance/preference):

Coat D'arms
Vallejo Model Colour Metals
Army Painter Shades (Bottles not dips)
Vallejo Game Colour
ArmyPainter Warpaints (though these could rise up the chart based on how they feel).

I use a mix of Vallejo Air, Game and Model series. As you would imagine the Vallejo air is excellent at going through the airbrush but with the correct thinning the Game and Model also spray very well. I have always found the Game series to have varied coverage depending on what colour and pigment content you get. I have wanted to try Reaper and P3's for quite some time but there are no stockists in Devon that I am aware of. Heard very good things about them.

I am sold on the Vallejo range. The dropper bottles have served me very well. Don't dry out like other brands, don't spill if knocked over and are easy to measure out when mixing. But the metallics that I have don't compare to GW in quality and coverage.
