New Codex - Same Old List?
Hah, finally I have the new codex, why so late? Well I was away on release day, and though I had a nose previously that was about it. The first thing I'm doing is taking a fairly typical list I was fielding under the old codex and re-price it with the new one, so here is the old....
and now the new... with old units repriced and ones which are no longer available, otherwise known as Marbo, removed.
So what changes to make?
Well the first port of call is the Lord Commissar, his roll previously was to make sure orders were followed using the Aura of Discipline. Under the old dex it specifically stated that his leadership could be so used for orders, but the way I'm reading it that is no longer the case as the Aura is used only for Fear, Pinning and Morale - which I would take to be break tests, not leadership tests. Any thoughts on that, am I wrong?
If that is indeed the case I'll be waving bye bye to the Commissar, the Flamer can also go from the Command HQ and Platoon HQ for the moment, giving me 140pts to play with.
Now this leaves me more then a little torn. I could add another Tank, or Scions (which I really do want to play with, I love the models and they are a tastier option now). I could add more Infantry, or of course bring back my beloved Roughriders, which given they now have a Pistol & Close Combat Weapon in addition to their Lances (AT LONG LAST!!) are that little bit more useful.
That of course is exactly what I'll do, so 65pts will go on a 6 man squadron of those, a further 75pts will go straight on a second Heavy Bolter equipped Heavy Weapons Squad for now bringing me back upto 1500pts.
So what has the new codex done to your old faithful list and what changes are you planning? Or are you just starting from scratch?

The Infantry have remained the same, with a ten point swap between the Veterans and their transport. The HQ's have gone up by 15pts, the Manticore by 10pts and the Vendetta by 40pts, but the Eradicator has dropped a tasty 40pts as well.

Now that all said, I think the new Heavy Weapons Squad will be replaced by a Wyvern just as soon as I can get one put together, I'm also tempted to drop the Manticore in favour of a second Eradicator leaving me 40pts, enough for some Snipers - either Ratlings of a Special Weapons Squad - or perhaps some of the other new toys, maybe even dropping an Infantry Squad in favour of some Scions. Oh the possibilities!

40k Throne of Skulls January 2014
Right, well I singularly failed to do battle reports for Throne of Skulls - and in all honesty I dont think I could now! So instead, I'll just do a quick photo dump of the pictures I did manage to take!
Game 2 saw me up against the Space Marine force of Ash Turner in which he had a Wall of Martyrs Firestorm battery with a Devastator Squad inside and a pair of Thunderfires.... it hurt. I did manage to destroy the fortification eventually, but it was far too little too late.
Game 3 and I played Mark Burstal's Necrons. I've played Mark a couple of times before, he builds hard lists, and he uses them well, but he's a great opponent! At the start of the game things looked very positive for the Guard, I took down most of his Destroyers and all the Wraiths, but his Necron Destroyer Lord just would'nt die, and assisted by Immortals his badly depleted army was able to hammer mine to submission - I just ran out of troops in the end!
No pictures of either of these games, not a reflection of my losing them I have to say, they were both pretty intense but enjoyably so!
I ever sneaked a mention in White Dwarf 10 in Jes' Event Report!
And yeah, three stompas in three games! Ha! Revenge for the 24th Foot!
Game 1 was verses Orks! I know there were Mega Orks, Ard Boyz a Bomba of some description oh yes, and a Stompa! |
Said Stompa got very close... and then died to an overwatching Lascannon IIRC, second Stompa kill of the weekend and a win for the Guard! |

Game 4! Whats that coming over the hill...? |
It makes a Guardsman feel very small - but were the Praetorians daunted? Hell no! |

After After the Storm
Now this is going to be a pretty massive picture dump in fact, in a similar fashion to the Admirals report which you find on his blog in Part 1 and Part 2 I'll try an give you a gist of what was going on with captions - my battle reporting talents are somewhat lacking!
The Battlefield awaits! |
A total of 12'x4' |
Quite a lot of cover, though the two largest buildings were impassable. |
The massed Cadians |
The massed Praetorians - albeit spread out to look a bit more imposing! The Mission station is behind them! |
The Praetorian Scout contingent deploy |
But not unnoticed - Cadian Veterans lead by Harker on the right flank. |
Concealed by the darkness the Praetorians advance, taking pot shots as they go. |
And are reinforced by the first random infantry contingent while exchanging fire in the darkness with the Veterans. |
However the Cadians own reinforcements are not far behind. |
As the darkness finally lifts the Praetorians press on, the casualties slowly mounting up on both sides, but then... |
'More Cadians Sir! Hundreds of em!' |
The infantry battle is on. |
The Praetorians press on slowly in the centre, the greater weight of anti-personnel fire is starting to show. |
Though on the flanks things look better. The Cadian Veterans are finally driven off, and destroyed in the open. |
The Praetorians in the center prepare to make one last push. |

After the Storm - One Last Outing for Codex Imperial Guard
Opposing forces have been widely scattered after violent
atmospheric disturbances in the last twelve hours, with infantry digging-in
deep, naval forces grounded and armoured units being secured within impromptu
laagers. Now though, as the rad-storms and electron blizzards begin to subside,
the ground elements have started to reorganise and get back to the job at hand.
In this sector, both sides are keen to locate an unidentified
object which disappeared suddenly from scanners after plummeting from high
orbit towards a post-industrial wasteland deep in no-man’s-land.
I'll be making the journey down to Plymouth after work tomorrow for one last game using the soon to be retired Imperial Guard codex for a big old scenario bash with the good Admiral Drax. Pictures will be taken aplenty I'm sure, but first I had to put together an army. The scenario calls for flyers and artillery to be left at home, and for the army to be broken into two core elements, the main Infantry force of 1500pts, and a more rapidly moving Cavalry group of 1000pts which will arrive from reserve as the game. So here we go!
