Tutorial - Swapable Basilisk/Medusa Artillery Tank
I decided I needed a Medusa, well two actually, for a tournament thats coming up, the catch being I don't have a Medusa, or the money to splurge on a Forgeworld kit. What I do have is three Basilisk partially assembled so I decided I needed to come up with a way to field them as either a Basilisk or Medusa, given they're essentially largely the same this is fairly easy.
To do this you need:
1 Basilisk kit
1 Baneblade Demolisher Cannon Barrel
Length of 10mm Plastic Tubing (Thin)
Length of 8mm Plastic Tubing (Fat)
I'm sure you can already see where I'm going with this.
Stage one is to take your assembled Earthshaker Gun, this could even be done on a tank thats already been fully assembled allowing you to retro fit the ability to switch between these two vehicles.

Stage two is too saw through the barrel as close as possible to the breach assembly, this needs to be done very neatly and carefully otherwise you'll end up with a bad fit and gaps later on, use a hobby saw.

Now in stage three you need to fit the larger 10mm tube inside the breach assembly, push it in as far as possible, this should be about 50mm, then remove the excess, cutting neatly as with removing the barrel.

Stage four is means cutting two sections of the small 8mm tubing (or whatever else you have, this needs to slot inside the 10mm tubing neatly), this will want to be about 55mm long.

Now you can fix this 8mm tubing inside your Earthshaker barrel (ensuring that it is central and straight, check it, test fit it, because a wonky barrel will look silly! If you've done it right you won't be able to spot the difference between this finished piece and the original before you started your conversion.

You'll need to then do the same for the Demolisher Cannon barrel, once dried your good to go, Basilisk or Medusa on demand!

Commission - Praetorian Ogryn Squad (Part 17)
That's it, the Bonehead has his Chainsword and the final Ogryn his hand, though it was sculpted in the end.

And with that the Praetorian Ogryn Squad are complete, it's been a hell of a project, it's taken far longer then I could of imagined but the results are such that I'm really rather pleased with them. I think they're characterful, and fit the theme of a Praetorian unit, but one which is a wee bit on the rough side! I'll actually be quite sad to see them go and it's very tempting to want to get on and create such a unit for my own army - maybe sometime soon, it's not like I hav'nt got enough to get on with already!

Commission - Praetorian Ogryn Squad (Part 16)
What will probably be the penultimate post on the Praetorian Ogryn Squad has finally arrived, 8 of the Ogryns are now to all intents and purposes finished as far as I'm going with them, weapons have been added, gaps filled, and only two now remain.

The Boneheads Chainsword needs to be finished and attached, it's built from two Ork Chainswords combined, however before I add a grip I need to pin it into his fist to ensure it stays in place.

The final regular Ogryn meanwhile is in need of a hand, unfortunately I've run out, but I'm hoping to acquire one from a club mate this week which will allow me to finish this model also with a few minor bits of sculpting left to do.

Commission - Praetorian Officers & Sergeants (Part 3)
With a little more work I've finished the four Praetorian 'Character' models, top left has gained a Laspistol and a outstretched pointing arm, top right has had his cloak finished and gained a Laspistol in his exposed hand. Bottom left meanwhile has had a little tidying done and the bottom right has recieved a little more detailing including a small aquilla on the Power Fist.

Commission - Praetorian Ogryn Squad (Part 15)
At long last an update on the Ogryns.
A few days ago I recieved a package from TrooperPX, it's contents, the Ripper Guns.

I've got straight down to work adding the guns to the majority of the squad, there's a fair bit of gap filling and minor adjustments still to make, but all of aa sudden they've gone from work in progress to very nearly finished.

Finally the last two Ogryns are now underway properly, with the guns for fitting I've added the arms and am now working on the muscles (mostly on the back), so they look 'right' at the new angles, the first will be bare chested and is very nearly at the same stage as the first eight, while the second will be getting a vest making him the one with the most work to go.

Commission - Praetorian Officers & Sergeants (Part 2)
I've made a fiar bit of progress on the current batch of Praetorian 'Characters' I've been working on for a commission (I really must get round to working on some of my own models sometime soon!)
The first model is very nearly finished, with just a little tweaking and tidying of his holster to go, there really was very little to do with this one, simply combining parts from two models.

The second conversion while probably the most challenging is also infact realitively simple, taking a standard bearer which was incomplete I've added a cloak over his back and across one side, this is almost but not quite finished, the bottom needs finishing and again there is some tidying to do, it's then a simple matter of picking out a suitable weapon for his remaining free arm.
Sorry for the blury picture!

Next up is something I've not tried before, sculpting a power fist, this is simply an arm swap of one of the basic Sergeant models, there is a little bit more work to go on the fist and I also want to tweak the braiding before I call it a day with this one.

The final one is the only one which I've changed slightly from my original plan, switching what were going to be magnoculars for a Laspistol from the bits box in a eureka type moment! I'm really pleased with the look of this model, just need to sculpt his pointing arm and tidy him now.

Commission - Praetorian Officers & Sergeants (Part 1)
The Brief -
To convert some different Praetorian Officer and Sergeant models.
The Commission -
I've been asked to create a sample of alternative Praetorian Officers and Sergeants for a customer, with further work possible. This is to be a small batch, I've elected to do four seperate models - the customer may or may not want all of them, but I don't see this as a problem - I can always use them myself afterall!
I've selected a number of models/bits from my box of spares, one is starting to take shape already, the other three are roughly cut and ready to work upon. I've got a very clear idea of what I'm aiming for with each already which I'm pleased about as it's always nice to have an aim, so without further text, here are the victims of my snips thus far, sculpting will start shortly!
The first is already starting to take form.

And the other three, before...

and currently.

Commission - Praetorian Ogryn Squad (Part 14)
Another quick update on the Praetorian Ogryns, I can't believe the number of post's I've made in the blog already this month - can't help but get the feeling next month will be quieter!
The Corporal is now finished bar his weapon.

Of the other two this one is furthest along, he'll be bare chested, which will present the greatest challenge once the arms arrive as I've very little experience in sculpting muscles and no background in anatomy - result I'm currently doing my research on the net.

Slightly further behind is the final Ogryn, he'll have a vest eventually, again I@m stuck until the guns arrive from the caster before much more progress can be made, I'm hoping to get as far as possible with both of these however.

Commission - Vostroyan Nork Deddog (Part 6)
Well that's that, pending agreement by the customer the Vostroyan Nork Deddog is finished, and rather, okay very, pleased I am with him too!
I'll leave the pictures to do the talking, with first up a quick reminder of the original concept drawing.

Nurgle Obliterators (Part 2)
Just a litte update, with so many various project on now my Nurgle CSM force is a bit more on the back seat, however I have finished working on the torso's of the Obliterator's as far as sculpting goes, the pics are slightly better then before but I think it won't really become quite clear how the changes will blend in until I paint them - and I will finish the Plague Marines themselves first.

Colonel Gravis (Part 3)
This weekend see's the PAW 2010 event taking place, this is the Plymouth Association of Wargamers annual event which includes many trade stands, demo games and of course tournaments.
For the first time I'm going along as part of the Exeter Inquisition team which is heading down there (look out for the shirts if your there!), and I'm using it as an excuse to role out the Praetorians again, possibly with a fun list which I'll be maybe taking to the GT final early next month.
There are some unique extra contest's within the tournament however including such acolades as Best Painted Army Commander ... that in mind I'm gonna try an roll out a new Army Command especially for PAW, and yes that means it's the return of Colonel Gravis!
I visited this character last year, basing it from the Forgeworld Death Korps of Krieg Commissaar drawing his sword. Originally it was going to be a simple headswap with the Cadian Sergeant model, I've however had a change of heart and while the conversion remains simple I'm using a different head selected from the WFB Empire Outriders. The head of course is slightly out of scale, but I really like it, and given the amount of time I've got to get this done I can't now be too choosey.

I'll be going with his Pith Helmet on the floor once I get to it, but first there is the minor matter of getting him painted within a week... ho hum.

I've started work on painting him, some of the base coating is done, but a long way to go. I've essentially got three evenings to finish the model, so it's a bit of a race against time - we'll see how it goes!

Commission - Praetorian Ogryn Squad (Part 13)
Yet another update on the Praetorian Ogryns.

Another one is finished bar his weapons, to add a bit more variety to the Squad I elected to give this one and one of the others as yet unfinished a Glengarry cap which proved rather simple to pull off, with his completion only the Corporal and the two Ogryns which will be holding their Ripper Guns two handed remain.

The Corporal just needs work finishing on his face to tidy the removal of the models normal facial hair and work on the Pith Helmet he's now gained, this means detailing the press moulded piece and the join where it meets the heads - I'm thinking he may gain Mutton Chops as well similarly to one of the earlier models.

The remaining two have the furthest to go, I'm rather stuck too do much to them until the Ripper Guns arrive from the caster, however I am making progress with them, the heads and headgear are my current target, one has a Pith Helmet the other a second Glengarry, once these are finished I'll finish up the trousers and boots.

Commission - Vostroyan Nork Deddog (Part 5)
Probably this will be the penultimate post charting the progress of the Vosytroyan Nork Deddog commission, as sculpting has to all intents an purposes been finished. I've added headgear and facial hair amongst other things.
The headgear was my own choice, without it the model is quite stocky, I think it improves the look overal - but it's a look which really needs the weapons to balance it out, a Khurki and a Ripper Gun. The Khurki is simmple a matter of shaping a new blade from plasti-card the Ripper Gun meanwhile is more challenging - after mucking around with bits I'm working around part of a plastic IG Autocannon - hopefully that'll be finsihed this week.

Nurgle Obliterators (Part 1)
As well as my Plague Marines, my fledgling Nurgle CSM army will include a pair of Obliterator's. For one thing the army itself needs some fire support as I've discovered in my early games, and for another - well some groups of the Imperial Inquisition believe that Obliterator's are created by the infection of some form of Warp based Virus - and we all know who loves a good virus...
Though of course it needs a few changes to make it more pleaseing to Grandfather Nurgles eyes!

Commission - Vostroyan Nork Deddog (Part 4)
Nork is making slow but steady progress.
The torn sleeve is finished and his hands added, I'm now in the process of adding a glove to the good arm (which will eventually hold the Ripper Gun) and on giving some trim to his boots, though I've not plan to rework these as I think the toe caps fit in nicely with the model as is - the next big sculpting job with be his headgear - I really think that'll set the model off now.

Commission - Praetorian Ogryn Squad (Part 12)
Another update on the Praetorian Ogryns.
This guys is finished bar his gun now with the boots and hands added.

The Corporal is making progress, his cuffs are just about done, so he needs an Aquilla, rank chevrons, and a little work on the collar and belt - he'll probably get a helmet as well which means a little more work yet.

The final model of this group has seen the most work, cuffs, head, aquilla and some belt details have all been added and the epualettes finished. Now the belt needs finishing as does the collar and boots - again he'll probably get a helmet also to finish him up.
