Sculpting Pith Helmetted Heads (Part 9)

Following a little minor work to the fifth head here's the finished set, hopefully!

Sculpting Pith Helmetted Heads (Part 8)

And there we go, finished heads number four and five, despite a few problems I think these will fill the gaps in the set of 5 so each head is different - over to Secret Weapon now.

Sculpting Pith Helmetted Heads (Part 7)

Well I had thought this concluded, but not quite, I've been requested to sculpt a couple more heads for the Pith Helmet set, so that each pack contains 5 different heads and with a little time on my hands today I've got going on these two.

The first is a snarling face (and I can tell you I've been getting some odd looks from my girlfriend as I've been pulling faces in the mirror to get a good idea of what I'm trying to achieve!), the second is a minor resculpt of the basic closed mouth head with a mustache, which several enquiries about the heads have asked for - so here we go.

Hopefully these will be finished very quickly, over this weekend infact!

Sculpting Pith Helmetted Heads (Part 6)

Well thats it, pending acceptance by Secret Weapon Miniatures the heads are good to go, there are three variants, Mouth Closed, Mouth Open and Bearded - exactly the same range as a certain set of Pith Helmetted soldiers from the 4ast Millenium, can't imagine who they could be!

Assuming that they are accepted, and the noise has only been good so far, they could be available to purchase in metal from September.

Sculpting Pith Helmetted Heads (Part 5)

Thanks to TrooperPX I've got a batch of copies of my first sculpted Pith Helmet, I've now started reworking these into a number of different faces, once completed some of these will, all going well, enterproduction with an existing manufacturer, something I'm really excited about.

Sculpting Pith Helmetted Heads (Part 4)

Some progress on the heads (actually only as a result of some waste putty while working on the Ogryns!), this is the second head, the first one which was pictured in the previous post is getting some more drastic surgery as I was'nt happy with the mouth as it worked out.

This one is getting quite close to being finished now, a little more work on the jaw, a chin strap and he's just about finished, the Ogryns are still top of the pile so these are a side line at the moment, I'll get the first head finished next and then start work on some more.

Sculpting Pith Helmetted Heads (Part 3)

I've spent a little more time working on the Pith Helmetted Heads, the result of which is progress I'm rather pleased with so far!

After a few false starts I've finally got a face I'm happy with as shown below.

He looks a little odd here, the simple reason for that is he does'nt yet have a lower jaw or jaw bone, or chin(!). Time an time again I've found that as soon as I try an do the lower part of the face at the same time as the upper I end up ruining the sculpt, so dispensing with that I'm settling on doing this is two stages, this has the added benefit that I can marry it up to the pith helmet early...

Yeah still looks odd, but the next stage will hopefully remeady that as I add the jaw, chin and back of the head, this will bulk it out somewhat, once thats completed it merely a matter of adding ears, a little hair if appropriate and a strap to keep the helmet on and the first head will be ready.

Sculpting Pith Helmetted Heads (Part 2)

A couple of days ago I recieved a little package in the post...

The contents consisted of 20 resin copies of the Pith Helmet I sculpted as part of a Tutorial a few months back. The thing is I was rather pleased with that particular piece and decided it would be ideal for my 28mm Pith Helmetted Heads. Doing it this way, using a single master, also meant that I could achieve consistantcy across the proposed sprue without the headache which would otherwise be entailed. So the helmet was carefuly removed from the head, and sent across 'the pond' to TrooperPX who provides an excellent and reasonably priced Resin Casting service.

There is the odd bubble, but nothing that a little tiny bit of green stuff won't fix, so I'm about to dive into sculpting the faces. After much more thought my plan is for the sprue to consist of 5 heads, two with their mouth closed, two open and one with a beard, I'll also put a spare helmet on each one for conversion's.

Sculpting Pith Helmetted Heads (Part 1)

At the end of 2007 I sculpted my first face while working on Captain Caine, I've played around with faces on an of a little since then with little success but now I at it again with a plan.

My intention at the moment is too sculpt and release my own set of Pith Helmetted Heads in 28mm Heroic Scale, which of course amongst other things would be suitable for Praetorian conversions. The helmet is done and I'll be sending this away to get multiple copies made up so all the headgear will be consistant - that leaves the hardest part, the faces themselves.

While I was very pleased with the overal model I was never entirely happy with Captain Caine's face, it was'nt particularly fantastic though not bad for a first attempt, the thing was as you can see below it's quite jowly, far too chubby and not brillaintly defined.

In the past few days I've been working on more faces, it's very slowly going and quite fustrating at times as any change made on something with fine detail will change something else as well, but I think I am making progress especially with the aid of a couple of tutorials I'd like to point out to anyone who might be interested in having a go themself.

One Ring : Sculpting Masterclass - Pulling Faces

Scribor Miniatures : Sculpting a Face in 10 Minutes

Sculpting Faces really does highlight to me that you need to find your own way however, what works for one person does'nt always work for another, so it's a really good idea to read around, ask questions of others and then find what works best for you, I will aim to do my own tutorial eventually, but thats a way down the line yet.

At the moment I'm turning out a face a day spending something like an hour at it each time, I hav'nt yet got it too a point that the first result is one I'm happy with so I'm often going back and starting again.

The first result was quite chubby still and slightly too long, the nose has also been giving me trouble always being a little larger then suited the face, though I was far more happy with the eyes then my earlier attempts.

The next one corrected the chubbyness a little, but was longer still, the lower eye lids also ended up bigger then I'd of liked. I think the longness in the face resulted from over doing the shape while not reducing the amount of putty I was using, with the nose also way extended.

Today's worked out a bit better, the eyes I'm happy with as I am with the nose, the shape and length of the face are roughly there, though it's not quite symmetrical, and the lower jaw is'nt quite right. I'm pretty pleased with it overal though, so hopefully in the next few days I'll have something close to a final face to show.

My plan is too have perhaps three shaven faces for the initial head sprue, one mouth shut, one mouth open, one well I've not really decided about that yet, a second sprue with bearded heads and variant heads could perhaps then follow.
