Making Your Hobby Cash Neutral?

At the end of last year, which actually I suppose is'nt that long ago I decided to try an make some Hobby Resolutions, so far I think I'm making a good start (but then dont resolutions always go well for the first month?) My posting on the blog is up, I'm getting on with long term projects and I've resisted the urge to delve into a WFB Nurgle themed Chaos Army (though it's an infection I dont expect to hold off forever!).

So where am I going with this? Well as well as getting what I've started done, or rather not starting anything new I was wondering how else I could cut back on hobby spending (as I'm sure many of us do at times), it was then I happend across a blog post over on Lone Pilgrim's Blog (one of quite a large number of blogs I follow). His quite simple take on hobby spending is too only purchase from a single fund, a fund which is increased through the sale of old hobby materials, small change and the like, while I'm sure he's far from the only person to take this approach I think it's a damn good idea.

That in mind I'm adding one more last minute hobby resolution, too try and make my hobby cash neutral for a year, which can only be a good thing really given my plans to hopefully buy a place of my own by the end of the year and a two week holiday to America in the spring. I'm gonna adopt the same format as lone pilgrim for this, which I hope he wont mind, so without further ado, here we go.

  • Starting Balance 1st January (Previous Sales) = £37.85

  • Sales since 1st January = £44.00

  • Sales Fee since 1st January = -£1.22

  • Purchases since 1st January = -£61.71

  • Current Balance = £20.14

What are your spending habbits when it comes to the hobby? Do you let your hobby fund your hobby, work to a fixed hobby budget, or perhaps just purchase what you want when it's needed?

Malcador (Part 4)

Just a (quick) update from the work bench!

The Malcador is (at last) nearing completion, the main hull itself just needs a little mud now with the painting complete, and okay it's not alot but I'm especially pleased with the free hand four!

Besides the mud, I need too add a radio aerial which will also have a little penant on it, probably with an aquilla on, I've cut down the aerial from the IG Tank Accessory sprue, drilling a metal pin into it to give it solid, well pin, to the hull, though it wont be glued for transport purposes.

There's still one thing on my mind though, should it get a name? I've not for my Russ, but I will be for the big Super Heavies like the Baneblade, the Malcador I see as fitting halfway between the two, as a Heavy Tank, any thoughts, if you think it does deserve a name suggestions welcome!

FtW Round Table - The Things We Most Appreciate About the FtW Group

The 40k blogging community really seems to have grown exponentially in the past couple of years, indeed as it seems to have for all aspects of wargaming as a whole, when I first came to it there were just a few well read blogs, and now there are many, some focused on a particular aspect such as a specific army, modelling, or battle reports, others more general blogs of individuals or groups of gamers, they vary from the power house that is the Bell of Lost Souls with it's huge following to the smaller blogs with a post every couple of months detailing one individuals hobby over the course of time.

From the Warp provides an easy way for people too browse amongst a group of good quality active blogs, your bound to find something of interest to you personally amongst them, a new tactic, a hobby artical or just something thats bloody cool and inspirational. Now sure simple linking between blogs does do the same, but the level of interaction between the blogs which are part of FtW is what seperates them from the masses, with regular interblog discussion, challenges etc it just takes something great and makes it better, with people bouncing ideas off each other, discussing and taking inspiration more so then even more so then you'd normally expect.

It's a real credit to how much Ron the founder of the group achieved in such a short space of time, and one I have no doubt will continue now real life concerns have forced his hand as he moves on and passes the reins to Peter of the Aspect Portal.

Have you ever thought about documenting your adventures in our hobby with a blog? If not why not, now is definately as good a time as any to get going, so dont put it off, create yourself an account and a blog, and dont forget to sign up for From the Warp!

Draft Imperial Fist List - 1500pts

More thoughts, more list's, this time for my fledgling Imperial Fist's Space Marines, as with the Ork's they'll be plenty more to add to this, but for the moment this is what I'm looking at working towards. It's themed around Captain Lysander who I love as a model and had to include, so two units of Terminators and a Dreadnought from the 1st Company make an appearance. This is reinforced by three tactical squads and it's all mounted for deep striking just for fun!

Captain Lysander @200pts

===> Love the model, love Imperial Fist's, it's therefore a no-brainer for me even if I normally dont use Special Characters.

Terminator Assault Squad inc. 5xTerminators, 3xLightning Claws, 2xThunderhammer & Storm Shield @200pts

Terminator Squad inc. Sergeant, 3xTerminators, 2xChainfists, Assault Cannon @240pts

===> To go with Lysander come some of his 1st Company, with a basic Terminator Assault Squad and a basic Terminator Squad with Assault Cannon and a couple of Chainfists - I may yet switch to a Cyclone Missile Launcher though as ranged Anti-Tank is a little lacking.

Dreadnought inc. Plasma Cannon, Extra Armour @130pts
Drop Pod @35pts

===> As with the Orks I love the Space Marine Dreadnought, Plasma Cannons meanwhile are just fun though possibly a twin-linked Lascannon may have been more sensible for Anti-Tank, though then again given it's my only threatening vehicle keeping it's cost low may be wise.

Tactical Squad inc. Sergeant, 9 Marines, Flamer, Heavy Bolter @170pts
Drop Pod @35pts

Tactical Squad inc. Sergeant with Power Weapon & Plasma Pistol, 9 Marines, Plasma Gun, Missile Launcher @210pts
Drop Pod @35pts

Tactical Squad inc. Sergeant with Power Fist & Combi-Melta, 9 Marines, Melta Gun, Missile Launcher @210pts
Drop Pod @35pts

===> Three full strength tactical squads giving me between 3 and 6 scoring units depending on the mission and my choice with Lysander, the first is kitted for dealing with hordes, the second for dealing with MEQ's and the third for armour and really tough stuff.

Draft Ork List - 1500pts

After a little thought this is the basic competative list I'm going to be working towards for my Orks, there'll also be about 500pts of extra fun stuff so I can swap an change things around a bit as the mood takes me.

Warboss inc. Power Klaw, Cybork body, 'eavy armour, boss pole, attack squig @120pts

===> A fairly standard warboss outfit.

10 Nobz inc. 7x 'eavy Armour, Pain Boy, 2x Big Choppa, 2x Power Klaw, 4xBoss Pole, Waaagh Banner, Stikkbombz @375pts

(1xPain Boy with Armour, 1xPower Klaw with Armour, 1xPower Klaw with Armour and Boss Pole, 1xBoss Pole, 1xBig Choppa with Armour, 1xBig Choppa with Armour and Boss Pole, 1xno upgrades, 1x with Armour, 1x with Armour and Boss Pole, 1x Armour and Waaagh Banner)

Trukk inc. Red Paint Job, Armour Plates @50pts

===> Okay, hands up I know I'm being a total git with wound allocation here, with every model different! Theres the Pain Boy for Feel No Pain, the Waaagh Banner for the WS bonus, a couple of Power Klaw's for really hurty hitty, a couple of Big Choppa's for those targets which just need that little bit extra strength, and some basic Nobz to round it all off for weight of attacks and wounds. Joined by the Warboss and loaded up in their Trukk (which I dont expect to last long!) they should be able to at least get where they'll do the most damage and well, krump!

26 Boyz inc. Nob with Power Klaw, Bosspole @196pts

26 Boyz inc. Nob with Power Klaw, Bosspole @196pts

26 Boyz inc. Nob with Power Klaw, Bosspole @196pts

===> Lots of Boyz, whats not to like, unless they're on the opposite side of the table!

3x Deffkopta inc. twin linked rokkit launcha @135pts

===> Well I've got the models, they're fast, fun, and a nusiance for my opponent, they're in! I did think about having them as three seperate units of one, but that would be nasty for KP's, perhaps one single and one unit of two?

Deff Dread inc. 2 Skorcha, armour plates, grot riggers @100pts

===> I've always loved Orky Dreads, this was mandatory - even if it will draw lots of AT (maybe away from the Trukk or vice versa though!).

Big Gunz inc. 2 Zzzap Guns, 2 extra crew, @66pts

Big Gunz inc. 2 Zzzap Guns, 2 extra crew, @66pts

===> Big Gunz, I love big gunz! And Grots! These provide a little suporting firepower, especially against heavily armoured targets (by which I mean 2+ saves mostly) as well as vehicles. These guys can take advantage of whatever cover exists while the rest of the army goes on the attack.
